There are very few people that go into work every day and leave with a smile on their face. That's just the reality we live in, but is it the one we have to constantly accept? Hell. No. When you find yourself at a job that feels like it's sucking the life out of your soul, it's time to pack that cardboard box often shown in movies, take your stuff, and run. Of course, there are a million and one reasons to stay at your current job. Like for example, you need to pay your rent and would love to continue to eat. But sometimes, it's worth it to risk it all just to have a moment's peace when the job is really that bad. If you're still on the fence about we're here to tell you some of the tell-tale signs that it's time to make major changes when it comes to your work life.
It's not just a movie for some. Horrible management is often the leading cause of grief in the workplace for many. Whether it's an asshole who somehow got to be in charge, or an idiot, or worse...an asshole who is also an idiot - it's all reason enough to start applying elsewhere. No one should ever have to work under someone who treats them and the company like dog waste on a sidewalk in the middle of summer. Word the wise though, if they are as UGH as you say they are you may want to skip naming them as a reference and list someone else in a position of power there.
There are careers where you reach the height of the position and it's amazing. Like if you're a lawyer or a doctor, but when you're not in a position like that it can be daunting and frankly depressing to hit a wall and feel like there is literally nowhere else to go. Living is all about growth and if you can't get that from the place you spend 40+ hours a week, then what are you to do? Find something that offers you a chance to progress with your skills and talents, a job that doesn't box you in.
This goes without saying if you're feeling like you're getting absolutely nothing out of your job but a paycheck then that's not a life worth living or working. It's easier said than done to move onto a new career that will leave you fulfilled. We get that. So what you need to do is start figuring out what it is you want to do and take rational steps towards making that your new reality. Just make sure you don't just walk out without a plan. Rent doesn't wait for your dreams to come true. Be smart about your career change!
Speaking as someone who has worked with rats, both human and animal, I fully understand what it means to work hard AF for close to nothing. It sucks but sometimes you have to just suck it up and make it work for the time being. However, the time being shouldn't mean the rest of your life. If you're putting in all you've got and are getting less than great pay - that's a definite sign to start browsing job boards. You are worth more than that.
This isn't the biggest deal breaker for most but think about it. If you spend too much time getting to and from work, at a job you're not that jazzed about, then that means you're not spending time doing what you want in life. You don't want to look back when you're 75 and have all your memories clouded by traffic and car exhaust, do you?Previous Next
