The tumultuous 2021 is over, and I cannot think of a better way to start the new year (except, perhaps, going on the Paleo diet) than proposing to your loved one - the guy you last kissed under the mistletoe! As it’s a very special moment in life, make sure to do it right. And by “right” I mean three things:

Do some pre-planning.
Be original and emotional.
Avoid the corny part.
Sounds hard to achieve? If you are struggling with ideas, here are some suggestions.

Hiding the ring

If you have decided to propose the classic way, just please, please do not hide the ring in his creme brûlée! We all have watched movies in which the bride-to-be either swallows the ring or breaks a tooth biting into the platinum-and-gold jewelry. But if you insist on surprising your beau by hiding the engagement ring somewhere, at least make it fun to discover. For example, you can ask him to fix something in the apartment and place the ring inside what you need to be fixed. NB! Keep away from the blender! And the garbage disposal!

Or why not take him on a treasure hunt! Make a map with directions, and all. The map can lead to his favorite restaurant or a place that has a special meaning for both of you.

Or you can simply hide the ring between your butt cheeks and let him find it during foreplay.

Going on Gaycation

Proposing during a gay cruise is a popular choice. You can add a unique touch to this type of proposal, though, by asking random passengers on the cruise to create a flashmob on the ship deck and sing a verse of your partner's favorite song. If he likes doing private things in the presence of an audience, the pleasant surprise is guaranteed!

Writing it Down

Here are some tips in that direction:

Write the fateful question in the snow as you are riding the ski lift so that he can see “Will you marry me?” from above. And if he says “No”, you can always push him out of the chairlift. Just joking!

A less elaborate (and also less endangering your partner’s life!) plan is to rearrange the magnets on the fridge so that they form the proposing sentence. Or you can write the question on the steamy mirror in the bathroom before he goes in to shave. Or... do the same, only on his car hood and not with the tip of your finger but with bright rainbow colors (just make sure the paint can be easily removed!)

Keeping it Simple AF

If you don’t like the idea of organizing big family gatherings or booking an expensive vacation during which to pop the question, you can always keep it simple. Just imagine the surprise on the sleepy face of your significant other when he wakes up one morning and sees you on one knee by the bedside! Sure, one can get frustrated by not having the chance to brush their teeth before saying “Yes”, but after all, what you are aiming at is the “Am I still dreaming?” effect. Romantic, homey, intimate…

Using the Help of a Wingman

And by “wingman” I don’t mean your squash buddy Steve. Let a special someone speak for you. This could be your man’s favorite singer/actor/author… In other words, someone famous. Of course, you cannot be 100% percent sure they will be willing to assist, but it’s worth trying. The list of celebs who’ve helped their fans to pop the question is actually quite long: Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Mariah Carrey, Drew Barrymore, Tom Hanks… I personally remember that one time when Kelly Clarkson helped this guy, Alex Malerba, to make an emotional proposal to his longtime boyfriend before her concert in Las Vegas in June 2017. Kesha, too, has made the proposal moment of another gay couple extra magical when they said “Yes” to each other on stage during one of her concerts.

So, guys, nothing is impossible. You just need to check the touring schedule for 2022 of Ed Sheeran, Celine Dion, Harry Styles, or whoever is your favorite artist

Whatever approach you go for - doing it the posh way or keeping it low-key, remember one thing: It’s important to know your partner well, so that your proposal won’t make him feel embarrassed, ashamed, or mortified. And make sure no food or animals get harmed during the process.
